چکیده

The study of the chondrichthyan fauna from the Angostura, Onzole, Canoa and Jama formations, in the Neogene of Bordón and Manabí basins, Ecuador, reveals the presence of 30 taxa, including the deep water shark yChlamydoselachus landinii sp. nov. The assemblages are dominated by tropical shallow and deep water chondrichthyans, suggesting paleoenvironments associated with a short platform shelf bordering a deep margin. These assemblages are the most diverse shark and ray association known from the Tropical Central Eastern Pacific Ocean in the South American coastal basin, and provide new information on the paleoecology and paleodiversity of Neogene chondrichthyans. 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Species-level phylogeography and evolutionary history of the hyperdiverse marine gastropod genus Conus.

Phylogenetic and paleontological analyses are combined to reveal patterns of species origination and divergence and to define the significance of potential and actual barriers to dispersal in Conus, a species-rich genus of predatory gastropods distributed throughout the world's tropical oceans. Species-level phylogenetic hypotheses are based on nucleotide sequences from the nuclear calmodulin a...

Southern Ocean source of 14C-depleted carbon in the North Pacific Ocean during the last deglaciation

During the last deglaciation, atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations rose at the same time that the 114C of that CO2 fell. This has been attributed to the release of 14C-depleted carbon dioxide from the deep ocean1, possibly vented through the Southern Ocean2–5. Recently, a sediment record from the eastern North Pacific Ocean spanning the last deglaciation was interpreted to reflect transpor...

Decadal changes of ENSO persistence barrier in SST and ocean heat content indices: 1958–2001

[1] Decadal changes of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) persistence barriers in various indices of sea surface temperature (SST) and ocean heat content (OHC) are examined in this study using observations and ocean data assimilation products for the period 1958–2001. It is found that the SST indices in the eastern and central equatorial Pacific exhibit very different decadal barrier variabili...

Leading modes of tropical Pacific subsurface ocean temperature and associations with two types of El Niño

Using empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of the monthly tropical Pacific subsurface ocean temperature anomalies (SOTA) from 1979 to 2014, we detected three leading modes in the tropical Pacific subsurface temperature. The first mode has a dipole pattern, with warming in the eastern Pacific and cooling in the western Pacific, and is closely related to traditional El Niño. The second mo...
